Packaging Requirements for Export-Grade Commercial Refrigerators

For B2B buyers importing commercial refrigerators in bulk, packaging is not a finishing touch — it is part of product quality. A unit that leaves the factory perfect but arrives dented, rusted, or with a cracked glass door is a warranty claim, a customs problem, and a damaged client relationship. Export-grade packaging must survive 20–40 days at sea, 10+ handling nodes, humidity spikes, and 2–3 high stacking.

1、Outer Carton: Structural Integrity

Standard domestic boxes fail in ocean containers. Specify:
  • Double-wall or triple-wall corrugated (5-ply for 10–25 kg, 7-ply for 25–50 kg+)
  • Kraft liner 150–180 gsm, moisture-resistant coating
  • Edge Crush Test (ECT) rated for container stacking (~2.3 m high)
  • Mullen burst strength matched to total weight
  • No overhang beyond pallet footprint (reduces crush risk by up to 30%)
Carton must be dry, undamaged, correctly sized, and sealed before wrapping.

2、Internal Cushioning & Fixation

The cabinet must not move inside the box.
  • Corner blocks – EPE/PU foam, seated firmly, not loose
  • Edge protectors – V-board on all four vertical corners
  • Base restraint – cabinet fixed to pallet via straps + blocking
  • Glass-door units – foam guards, cardboard separators, taped door latch, no pressure on glass
  • Shelves/accessories – removed or secured in separate labeled packs; cannot slide into liner or tubing
  • Compressor & tubing – isolated from vibration contact
Ask the factory for photos with the lid off before mass packing.

3、Moisture & Corrosion Defense

Sea freight faces "container rain" — condensation dripping from container ceilings.
  • Moisture barrier: HDPE film or aluminum foil liner, heat-sealed
  • Desiccant: silica gel or calcium chloride sachets, dosed to route humidity
  • VCI protection (optional for metal parts): vapor corrosion inhibitor film/emitters
  • Closed-cell EPE foam preferred; open-cell PU must sit inside sealed barrier
  • Keep carton dry before closing — trapped moisture ruins insulation panels

4、Pallet & Wood Compliance (ISPM 15)

  • Solid wood pallets/crates/dunnage must be heat-treated to 56°C core for 30 min and stamped with the IPPC mark (country code + facility ID + HT)
  • Non-compliant wood = port detention, fumigation, or re-export at buyer cost
  • Alternatives: plywood, presswood, or plastic pallets (exempt from ISPM 15)
  • Pallet size: 1200×1000 mm (ISO) or 1200×800 mm (Euro) — match buyer warehouse
  • No product overhang; fork-entry clearance confirmed; straps protected by corner boards
  • PET strapping (not steel) — absorbs shock, no rust staining

5、Shipping Marks & Labeling

Each package needs:
  • Consignee code + destination port
  • Package number ("3 of 20")
  • Gross/net weight + dimensions (cm)
  • Country of origin ("Made in China")
  • ISO 780 pictograms: Fragile / This Way Up / Keep Dry / Do Not Stack (only when true)
  • Model, serial range, PO number
  • Private-label carton artwork approved before production
Marks must match commercial invoice, packing list, and BOL exactly.

6、Reinforcement by Product Type

Unit Type
Extra Protection
Glass-door merchandiser
Wooden frame, glass edge foam, door brace
Undercounter / prep table
Corner blocks, stainless film, base brace
Blast chiller / heavy unit
Plywood crate, reinforced base, tilt indicator
Pharma/lab refrigerator
Hermetic barrier, desiccant, tamper seal, data logger slot

7、Packaging Validation Before Bulk Shipment

Don't trust "we always pack like this." Require:
  • Sample pack review with lid-off photos
  • Drop/impact simulation based on ISTA weight band (not arbitrary height)
  • Vibration + compression test report
  • Tilt indicator on sensitive shipments (triggered label = inspect, not auto-reject)
  • Loading photos: dunnage airbags, lashing, blocked container

8、Incoterms & Cost Logic

  • FOB: buyer controls freight, but factory owns pack quality to port
  • CIF/DDP: supplier responsible for seaworthy pack + insurance
  • Reinforced export pack costs more per unit — but one damaged 40HQ can erase the savings
  • Factor damage rate into TCO: a 1% breakage on $80k order = $800 + freight + labor + client trust

Buyer RFQ Packaging Clause (Template Snippet)

Export seaworthy packaging required: 7-ply carton, EPE corner foam, V-board, moisture barrier + desiccant, fixed to ISPM-15 HT pallet (or plywood exempt), PET strapping, ISO 780 marks, private-label carton approved by buyer. Pre-shipment packaging photos mandatory. Drop-test report on request.

Bottom Line

Export-grade commercial refrigerator packaging is a layered system: structural carton + immobilization + moisture barrier + compliant pallet + correct marks. Buyers who specify packaging in the PO — not after the first claim — cut damage rates, avoid customs friction, and protect brand equity across long-haul routes.
