Differences Between Stainless Steel Sheets

You're right, stainless steel is a very stable and corrosion resistant material, which is why it's commonly used for kitchen appliances like refrigerators. The most common grades used are 430 and 201. Here are the main differences between 430 and 201 stainless steel:

Chemical Composition:

  • 430 stainless may or may not contain nickel, while 201 stainless contains 3.5-5.5% nickel. Both have relatively low nickel content and can still be susceptible to corrosion.

Properties:

  • 430 has good corrosion resistance, better thermal conductivity than austenitic steels, lower thermal expansion, and good weldability due to added titanium. It's used for architectural decoration, fuel burners, household appliances.
  • 201 has moderate acid/alkali resistance, high density, no bubbles/holes when polished. It's ideal for making all kinds of shell and bottom covers. Mainly used for decorative tubes, industrial tubes, and some shallow drawn products.
  • 201 has better corrosion resistance than 430. It also has good high temperature corrosion resistance and workability, so it's more suitable for industrial and food/medical applications, but is more expensive.

In summary, 201 is more corrosion resistant but 430 is cheaper. 201 suits industrial uses while 430 is commonly used in appliances and architecture. The choice depends on the specific application and corrosion resistance needed.
